About The Event
Reflections of working at the edge with complex trauma and suicidality. Sharon Paetzold
In this session, Sharon will examine philosophical, theoretical and complex trauma frameworks that underpin working with adults who have histories of complex trauma, comorbidity issues and suicidality.
Sharon will present a case study to explore the complexities of working with this particular client group as a sole practitioner in the mental health field. The nature of suicidality, chronicity and acuity of risks for this client group challenges the mental health system and poses ethical questions around the medical treatment model, therapeutic modalities and competency based practice issues for clinicians. In this case study, Sharon will examine the different psychological/ psychotherapy orientations and therapeutic interventions from a developmental lifespan approach. This will be supported by contemporary research studies in suicidology to broaden the practitioner’s lens when working with this client group who often become entrenched in the mental health system with repeated admissions to psychiatric care. It will encourage practitioners to reflect on their own practice, explore vicarious trauma and resiliency when working at the edge with this complex client group.
